The Dickensian Legacy in Neo-Victorian and Postcolonial Literature
di Federica Zullo
The Victorian revivalism witnessed since the early 1990s has produced new approaches to engaging with history, literature and culture. Is it nostalgia for the past or difficulty in interpreting the present that has led numerous contemporary English language writers to look back to the nineteenth century? What does neo-Victorianism mean? What are the new paths of investigation in “neo-Dickensian” novels? This volume looks at works of literature as well as cultural and critical reflections within the broader Anglophone and postcolonial perspective, where neo-Victorianism is interpreted as a self-conscious act of revision of the Victorians themselves. Taking into account the richness and ongoing vitality of the Dickensian world, this volume analyses how the discourse of Imperialism entered both Charles Dickens’s novels and the complete context of mid-Victorian literary and cultural life.
