Foreword
Salvatore in his paper examined the policies that the countries of North Africa should adopt to achieve rapid growth and development, and reduce their high levels of unemployment and poverty, which are necessary for achieving social and political stability.
Persistent poverty is one of the top economic challenges facing the Egyptian government. Subsidies are one of the most important tools of public policies to reduce poverty by providing basic goods to low-income individuals at prices lower than the market ones. However, Egyptian food subsidy system has been through different reforms to decrease its cost and improve its targeting efficiency. Rana Hosni and Racha Ramadan study the impact of removing the rationed subsidized products and replacing it by cash transfers.
