Capitanio, Adinolfi, Goodwin and Rivieccio investigate the presence of shock price vertical contagion in the Italian hog market, describing the dependence structure along the supply chain and assessing the degree of extreme value dependence. They describe the relationship among extreme values along Italian hog supply chain also in terms of trivariate copula tail dependence measures, both in the upper and lower case. The empirical findings highlight the asymmetry of price transmission along the hog Italian supply chain, more relevant for wholesale-retail pair.
Mahdhi, Sghaier, Fouzai and Kadri analyze the different irrigators’ strategies and the economic profitability of irrigated production systems in relation to adaptations to the scarcity of groundwater resources in a context of climate change in the South east of Tunisian. These strategies include various adaptation m…easures such as annual cleaning and deepening of wells, the use of water saving, the change of the cropping system and the reduction of irrigated area.
To better understanding of the causality between food security, climate events and human activities and explore the opportunities to agri-environmental goals the authors Ardakani, Bartolini and Brunori explore to find the most significant agricultural sectors i.e. crops, livestock, and aquatics in delivering food security in Iran and on the other hand in emitting greenhouse gasses. The key message from the assessments is the future legislative outlines for mitigation, adaptation and resource management as well as consumer behaviour for how agriculture can deal with climate change.
Migliore et al. explores the economic impact of climate change on permanent crops cultivated in Sicilian region, a small Mediterranean region of Southern Europe. They confirm that crops respond to climatic variations in a different manner, highlighting that unlike the strong reduction in profitability of grapevine and citrus tree, the predicted average Net Revenue of olive tree is almost the same as in the reference period.
Rouabhi, Laouar, Mekhlouk, Dhehibi aim at the socioeconomic appraisal of two cropping systems namely no-till and tilled wheat in Sétif region (Algeria). No-till system is a production system aims at reducing the effort and cost of farming with the intention of protecting agricultural resources such as soil, water and biodiversity. Several government subsidy programs have been implemented to adopt no-till system, while, adoption process faced continually socioeconomic and technical constraints Efforts should emphasize on the improvement of the technical levels of farmers by strengthening the agricultural extension machinery, training, workshops and innovation research.
Hitouche, Pham and Brabez investigate on “Syrpalac” a mechanism of private storage operators for the constitution of the stocks of regulation in order to reduce price fluctuation of consumption potatoes. The results show the main factors that influence performances and implication of private operators to use the mechanism of storage capacity, such as the perception of financial incentive, the profit margin, the diversification of the storage operators, the production area, the volumes and the mode of storage.
Elghannam and Mesias deal with consumer’s perceptions towards the potential use of social media to create online short supply chains for food in Spain. Although this tool can be found –with different levels of development– in companies of all sectors, in the case of food products is still rather limited. The main obstacle is that a large part of consumers still prefer to buy food physically in conventional outlets either because they perceive it the best way or even for unfamiliarity with online food purchasing. Results have shown that the first reason, which motivates consumers, is having confidence with respect to the brand or even to have a good experience in previous shopping with the same company.
Through the application of the cost-effectiveness analysis method, the authors Akli, Bouzit, Benmihoub analyse the optimal investment sequence that would cover, with a lower cost, the future water demand in the Algerian coastal basin. The results confirm the hypothesis relating to the disjunction between the technical and economic dimensions in the solutions adopted by the Algerian Government, according to which the latter often tends to favour technical solutions to the detriment of economic solutions in the resumption of water deficit.
