36. An Integrated Approach to the Study of Patterns of Long-Term Settlement and Land Exploitation in the Region of the First Nile Cataract (Egypt)
di Serena Nicolini
This volume mainly focuses on the complex mixing of archaeological evidence in a geographical and natural environment whose changes were impacted by and influenced by human activities and needs. Integrating various datasets, from historical and archaeological ones to the remote sensing observation of large areas, represents a challenging aspect of this research.
An area corresponding to ca. 18,000 km2 has been selected, and the chronological framework has been chosen to cover a considerable period, from the beginning of the 5th millennium BCE to the final Byzantine period. Throughout prehistoric and historical periods, this region has witnessed a mix of cultural traditions which have reflected on its rich archaeological record and ethnographic heritage: the Egyptian, Nubian, desert nomads, and later, Persian, Greek and Roman components are only some of the cultural entities which interacted within the landscape. A dynamic human approach to the landscape was evolving through time and contributing to the transformations of the environment.
