Exploring Interconnected Practices between Humans, Data and the Environment

The volume investigates the concept and the application of data-mediated design practices to foster interaction among actors on an urban scale, aimed at constructing actions to counter global problems. Given the complexity of these issues, the research assumes that collective and transdisciplinary actions are required to frame and address them. The research hypothesis discusses the necessity of identifying interaction and collaboration practices that enhance skills, fostering a collective understanding of socio-ecological issues – including segments of the population typically excluded from such processes. Another key reflection in the volume concerns the need to orient design practices toward beyond-human forms of collaboration, reflecting on the role of non-human actors, such as digital systems and natural elements. Starting from the observation of urban-scale problems, the volume proposes a conceptual framework, including formats and recommendations useful to address global issues, with a particular focus on the climate crisis.

Margherita Ascari
She holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Cultures and is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Advanced Design Unit, Department of Architecture, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna. Her research explores the influence of data and digital systems in co-design processes, with a focus on participatory research and collaborative service design in urban settlements.
