This is the first book dedicated to the orchestral harmonicas, a class of instruments comprising bass and chord harmonicas that has gained great popularity in the fifties in the USA and Europe. Since then, harmonica bands, trios and quartets have slowly disappeared from the musical scene due to the wide introduction of amplified guitars and heavy drum sets. This book covers a lot of material on the subject, such as the history, construction and note layouts of the instruments, playing techniques used by professional players, amplification strategies, modern digital harmonica techniques, circular breathing, specific exercises to learn to play. We hope that this book may stimulate a renewed interest in these beautiful instruments.

Gianandrea Pasquinelli is a quasi-professional harmonica player in his “second life” and has played in numerous festivals in Italy, Europe, and Asia. His most successful project is Armonauti Harmonica Trio for which he is known all over the world in the harmonica community.
In his day job he is the Head of the Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine – DIMES at University of Bologna, where he is full professor of Biotechnology and Methods in Laboratory Medicine at School of Medicine; he is member of the Academic Senate; his research activity spans nefro-vascular diseases and vascular stem cells.
