Persistent poverty is one of the top economic challenges facing the Egyptian government. Subsidies are one of the most important tools of public policies to reduce poverty by providing basic goods to low-income individuals at prices lower than the market ones. However, Egyptian food subsidy system has been through different reforms to decrease its cost and improve its targeting efficiency.
