Foreword
Increasing pressures on water resources are causing in many countries to (re)consider various mechanisms to improve water use efficiency for agricultural like Tunisia country. Jeder, Ben Hamza and Belhouchette show that the search for a compromise between farm income and water consumption is possible through an optimal price applying both the entropy maximization approach and the multi-objective optimization. This compromise is a way to ensure the sustainability of irrigated agriculture and the preservation of water resources in Tunisia.
Ignatov deals with the extent to which the economic security of the European Union has changed in the period of 2007-2017. The economic positions of the European Union have declined much as compared to the rest of the world the fact, which inevitably leads to the decrease of the community’s political and economic strength. Author proposes to identify the main subversive factors which affected the economic security of the European Union in the period of 2007-2017 and threaten the future perspectives of the Union.
The two channels that explain how migration of a household member affects human capital formation of those left-behind are income and family disruption effects. Çağatay, Mert, Koska, and Artal-Tur analyse remittances and migration impacts on human capital formation in Jordan with respect to preferred migrant destinations and to the originating governorates of migrants. Remittances are found to hav…e a positive impact on “schooling”, and findings do not change significantly across households with respect to the host country. Heterogeneity in the education level of migrants from different governorates does not play a significant role that effects a schooling decision, except for Mafraq region.
Osmani and Kambo aim at assessing the technical efficiency and factors affecting it for the Albanian apple farms. Major factors with positive effect of technical efficiency result access to advisory services, average plots size, number of apple plots; education and proportion of orchards under modern technology have negative effects; age, and farmer’s experience are not significant. Authors highlight the needs of policy to support farmers with training, information and extension, to improve their skills and knowledge, and ensure farmers are supplied with quality inputs and technologies at reasonable prices.
The Mediterranean diet (MD) is a multifactorial product since it is a result of a set of traditions, symbols, rituals, knowledge, capacities and skills concerning crops, harvesting, fishing, animal husbandry, conservation, processing, cooking, and particularly the sharing and consumption of food made operational. The authors Iseppi et al. deal with the opportunity to adopt a Mediterranean diet type as a tool for supporting worldwide an healthy nutrition for both public health prevention and agro-food production promotion in 22 Mediterranean countries. It is an original attempt to verify the reliability of the trends of the Mediterranean adequacy index in 22 countries, discovering the hidden turning points, within the framework of the resource-based theory (RBT) with particular reference to its methodology based on the overcoming of three levels threshold.
Daly-Hassen, Annabi and King-Okumu deal with the effects of climate change on the water scarcity on livelihoods. They assess the social and private profitability of two alternative tree-based adaptation techniques that have received state support in the traditional barley cropping/rangeland systems in Central Tunisia: olive tree plantation, and intercropping with cactus. The results showed that society does not benefit from offering incentives for olive production. It is possible for farmers to increase their incomes without increasing agricultural water use if they are encouraged to adopt intercropping with cactus to supplement livestock food and watering.
The use of geo-tagged photographs seems to be a promising alternative to assess Cultural Ecosystem Services CESs in respect to the traditional investigation when focusing on the study of the aesthetic appreciation of a protected area or natural landscape. According to the authors Alampi Sottini et al., crowd sourced data provided empirical assessments of the covariates associated with visitor distribution, highlighting how changes in infrastructure, crops and environmental factors can affect visitor’s use. These data can help researchers, managers, and public planners to develop projects, and guidelines in the rural landscape for increasing the supply for CESs.
In Turkey, Agricultural Development Cooperatives are very important for bringing the resources in rural area to the economy, establishment of agro-industrial facilities for processing agricultural products and preventing migration from rural area to cities. Ozalp deals with financial structures of Agricultural Development Cooperatives in the Western Mediterranean Region by using ratio analyses. Findings obtained from the study suggest that one of the most significant problems of agricultural development cooperatives is finance. The financial weaknesses of the cooperatives examined means that they can face financial problems in the long run and poses a risk in terms of the continuity of the surveyed cooperatives.
