Foreword
In this issue the first paper aims at shedding some light on the potential factors that influence innovative technologies (IT) adoption in the Tunisian arid areas. Technological, economic, institutional factors and social specific factors are selected to be the determinants of agricultural technology adoption. Dhraief et all. show that economic and socio-demographic factors such as farmer education, size of cattle flocks and off-farm income were statistically significant and had positive influence on technology adoption while age and farmer experience had significant and negative effects on IT adoption. In contrast, labor and credit services do not significantly influence adoption of IT.
The paper of Camanzi, Hammoudi and Malorgio seeks to outline governance solutions to improve ex-ante compliance capacity of TMCs production and to enhance integration with the EU market. A set of research hypotheses, concerning the difficulties and benefits related with food safety compliance, are formulated and analyzed by Delphi method. The main problems identified relate to the establishment of long-term contractual relationships, along with the monitoring of suppliers. The main benefits include more efficient supply chain relationships and fairer commercial practices. The most promising strategies include the development of public and private co-regulation, strengthening of downstream control system and encouraging horizontal coordination strategies in TMCs.
Author Ms…addak faced problems related to market imperfections and institutional and socio-economic processes in the dairy value chain in Tunisia. The paper uses a gaming simulation approach to allow breeders to experiment and consider strategies of cooperation which lead to increased returns and improved quality of milk. Results show that benefits to breeders are derived from the price of milk which is determined by the number of cooperation in the repeated games strategies. Paper focused on cooperation and trust related to quality of milk, but cooperation can be affected by other social factors. This implies a need for further empirical research that includes other characteristics, norms and values explaining the choice to cooperate and the governance mechanisms in general.
Authors Djella, Cembalo, Furno and Caracciolo test the extent to which the oil-export may contribute to the food dependency and to the food insecurity of a country, providing empirical evidence of the presence of the “paradox of plenty”. The empirical analysis is carried out in countries characterized by a percentage of oil contribution to the GDP between 45% to 90% meanwhile facing food security challenges. The results showed that the existence of food dependence on oil revenue is not an exclusive condition of the six analyzed countries. However, these countries are also characterized by socio-economic instability and food insecurity, all struggling in using natural resources to enhance agricultural production.
In order to determine the degree of sustainability of poultry farms, Mahmoudi et all. analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the production system and identify practices to improve it in Algeria. The authors proceeded to assess the socio-economic sustainability of the poultry farms. The results indicate that the best-capitalized farmers and those with technical and economic know-how are aware of the issue of economic viability and diversification of activities and customers, which improves their incomes and decreases the economic fragility of their farms. However, for most farmers, the work is difficult, and the productivity of the workforce is low.
Kilic et all. tried to determine the factors affecting urban land prices in Atakum district of Samsun province. Rapid population increase and new public facilities such as roads, tram line, schools, etc.) made Atakum a new urban side of Samsun and agricultural lands changed to urban lands especially within the last two decades. The significant factors affecting parcel prices were the distance to coast, floor area ratio, parcel size, parcel shape, distance to tram station, post office and bus station. Anyway, the rapid urbanization of the district has brought about many social and economic problems and has led to significant environmental issues such as marine pollution.
Bouzaida and Doukali evaluate the socio-economic and environmental impacts of irrigation water on farming system sustainability in Zarzis area, using the IDEA method by analysing the three sustainability scales (agro-ecological, socio-territorial and economic). Irrigated agriculture is an important activity in the existing agrarian system, favoring a good territorial dynamic. However, the results indicate that the sustainability of farms in irrigated areas is limited by the socio-territorial scale. For the economic scale, farmers are characterized by their financial autonomy stemming mainly from financial aid received from the diaspora abroad.
Güneş and Güldal tried to determine the efficiencies of agricultural enterprises in the use of capital and credit in Turkey by DEA. According to the research results, it is determined that agricultural enterprises in Turkey do not use effectively the capitals, and they can achieve the same agricultural income with a low level of capital. Furthermore, the results of the study revealed that agricultural credits used in Turkey generally have been used to meet periodic needs of enterprises, and for non-agricultural needs.
