The monumental complex of Santa Maria della Vita, home to Niccolò dell’Arca’s famed Compianto from around 1463, is one of Bologna’s most visited sites, and it is a part of the Genus Bononiae. Through words and images, this volume aims to present what Carlo Cesare Malvasia described in the seventeenth century as a group of “endlessly crying Madonnas,” perhaps the most beautiful terracotta sculpture of the Italian Renaissance.
