The Construction of Molecular Architectures
Guidelines to Organic Synthesis Design
a cura di Claudio Trombini
While with our senses we admire the existing world, molecular sciences watch the same world at another scale, the molecular level, thanks to technological devices that allow us to observe an “augmented reality”, by conferring our senses an extraordinary enhancement of sensitivity. At the core of molecular sciences stands chemical synthesis, the branch of chemistry that allows us to create ever new molecular architectures by manipulating the existing ones. The job of the synthetic organic chemist starts with a structure design, where a molecular architecture (target molecule) is correlated to physical properties and function. Then the target molecule must be synthesized by applying logical approaches and synthetic methodologies.

This book is addressed, above all, to students enrolled in Master and PhD programs who want to specialize in chemical synthesis. The first three chapters describe fundamental concepts culminating with the “shape” of a synthetic plan, the economy and sustainability issues that determine its “score”, up to the stages retrosynthetic analysis consists of. The central chapters of this book are focused on the disconnective analysis of general target molecules. Following retrosynthetic analysis guidelines, mono-, difunctional, cyclic, and chiral target molecules are analyzed in terms of their most useful strategic disconnections, then each disconnection is correlated to precise synthetic methodologies, each one elucidated by means of specific example
