The goal of this book is to shed light on what has happened in Italy during the COVID-19 outbreak, an exceedingly momentous time in national history, in a variety of ways: concerning what the response has revealed about the performance of the economy, the underlying policy forces, and the structural outlook.

This volume is an instant book of sorts, in the sense that it is reaching bookstores only a few weeks after the lifting of most containment bans (although many social distancing measures remain in place) in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, signalling at least a temporary victory over COVID-19. Nonetheless, it is also meant to serve as a compass to help repair the immediate economic and social damage and kick-start the recovery, now that a modicum of normality has returned.
