Palazzi, villas and convents, Institutes and Faculties erected in the twentieth century, libraries, museums and scientific collections belonging to the University of Bologna: the sixty such places described in this book comprise an unusual university campus extending throughout the city. Theirs is also the history of Bologna; the protagonists are architects, builders, engineers, painters, decorators and sculptors who gave the city its physiognomy across the ages.

A cultured fifteenth century at the court of Giovanni II Bentivoglio; the wildly imaginative Cinquecento of Pellegrino Tibaldi, Amico Aspertini and Nicolò dell’Abate; the stage-set staircases of the Baroque age with vaulted ceilings painted by Domenico Maria Canuti, Marcantonio Franceschini, Ubaldo and Gaetano Gandolfi; followed by a hyper-refined Settecento with its Science Institute and Carlo Francesco Dotti’s design for a sumptuous library; the happy neoclassical blend of sculptures by Giacomo De Maria and architecture by Angelo Venturoli producing Palazzo Hercolani, last of the town’s senatorial residences. Then came an architectural revival by Alfonso Rubbiani and Guido Zucchini in the Institutes of the early twentieth century; architects and engineers galore, such as Edoardo Collamarini, Gualtiero Pontoni, Gustavo Rizzoli and Attilio Muggia, down to those masters Giuseppe Vaccaro, Giovanni Michelucci and Enzo Zacchiroli who shaped the university campus down to the 1970s. In these pages Europe’s oldest …university reveals its legacy of mirabilia: a grotto encrusted with shells and stones, two trompe l’oeil rooms decorated alla boschereccia, the long frieze of Charles V’s coronation, an exquisite stucco alcove, the astronomy tower of the Specola, the zoology Aula Magna, a library in veneer inlaid with symbols of the elements, the natural history collections of Ulisse Aldrovandi, a mosaic portrait of Pope Benedict XIV, the anatomy waxworks of Ercole Lelli – and more besides.

Over 200 photographs illustrate these features, enabling the reader to share the privilege of those who work and study here every day.

Andrea Bacchi teaches History of Modern Art at the University of Bologna. Since 2014 he has been director of the Federico Zeri Foundation. He has specialised in Po-valley renaissance painting and Italian sculpture from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. His publications include: Francesco del Cossa, 1991; Scultura del ’600 a Roma, 1996; Scultura a Venezia da Sansovino a Canova, 2000. He has curated exhibitions: “La bellissima maniera”. Alessandro Vittoria e la scultura veneta del Cinquecento, Trento, Museo Castello del Buonconsiglio, 1999; Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture, Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2008; Bernini, Rome, Galleria Borghese, 2017; L’Eterno e il tempo tra Michelangelo e Caravaggio, Forlì, Musei San Domenico, 2018.

Marta Forlai graduated and specialised in Art History at the University of Bologna. She has liaised with Bologna’s Civic Museums of Ancient Art, and since 2003 has worked at the Federico Zeri Foundation. Special areas are Bolognese architecture from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century and projects to enhance and promote knowledge of the art heritage.

The professional photographer Antonio Cesari (Bologna) has devoted his long career above all to reproductions of monuments, frescoes and major painting cycles in some of the outstanding historic palazzi and churches of Italy.

Architecture graduate Oscar Ferrari (Bologna) has photographed works of architecture for over twenty years and made a detailed study of the contemporary and 20th-century scene.
