The Vittoriano is one of the most important symbolic monuments in Italy and Rome. It was built to commemorate Victor Emanuel II the first king of Italy, and after the First World War, it became the Altar of the Fatherland, as the burial place of the Unknown Soldier. Its sculpture and ornamental sections make it a focal point of Italian art between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition, the monument houses the Historical Museums which tell the story of the Risorgimento and key events in Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
