James Joyce spent most of his life in voluntary exile. This condition allowed him to experience linguistic diversity and displacement, and is reflected in Joyce’s defamiliarizing use of language, polyglot experimentation and inherently translational writing. This volume goes to the roots of Joyce’s multilingualism. By focusing on previously unexplored or underexplored manuscript material, it investigates the writer’s relationship with the Italian language as well as the role of Italian in his works. It also addresses the issue of translation by analysing the way in which Joyce’s works have been translated into Italian. Serenella Zanotti is Lecturer in English Language and Translation at the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Università Roma Tre (Italy).
